Zusammenfassung
Normales Altern geht mit einer Veränderung der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit einher. Es ist häufig nicht einfach, altersübliche Veränderungen der kognitiven Leistungen von frühen Demenzstadien zu unterscheiden. Erschwert wird die Abgrenzung durch den oft schleichenden Beginn demenzieller Erkrankungen und durch das bestehende Kontinuum zwischen Normalität und Frühsymptomen einer Demenz. Ein hohes Alter ist der bedeutendste Risikofaktor für die Entwicklung einer Demenz. Je älter eine Bevölkerung im Mittel wird, umso stärker steigt die Gesamtzahl an Demenzkranken.
