Zusammenfassung

Das metabolische Syndrom beschreibt eine Kombination aus metabolischen und kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren wie Adipositas, Glukosestoffwechselstörung, arterieller Hypertonie und Dyslipidämie, die zusammen mit einer deutlichen Erhöhung von Morbidität (Bonora et al.2004, Diabet Med 21:52–58), kardiovaskulärer Mortalität und Gesamtmortalität (Hu, Arch Intern Med 2004, 164:1066–1076) einhergehen. Synonym wurde das metabolische Syndrom auch als „Syndrom X“ (Reaven, Diabetes 1988 37:1595–1607), „Insulin-Resistenz-Syndrom“ (DeFronzo und Ferrannini, Diabetes Care 1991 14:173–194) oder „tödliches Quartett“ (Kaplan, Arch Intern Med 1989, 149:1514–1520) bezeichnet. Bis heute gibt es eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Definitionen, jedoch keine einheitlichen Diagnosekriterien des metabolischen Syndroms. Gemeinsam ist allen Definitionen des metabolischen Syndroms jedoch die unterschiedlich gewichtete Kombination der oben genannten Risikofaktoren
