Abstract
The history of stereotaxy in Spain dates back to the mid-1950s. Its early history was constrained by the negative impact of the Spanish Civil War on the development of medicine, as on other areas of Spanish society. However, during the 1960s, when various neurosurgeons returned to Spain, the speciality grew. Today it is difficult to find reports of surgical interventions performed by neurosurgeons during that time; in some cases, oral transmission provided the only way of finding out about the development of functional stereotactic surgery in Spain during the 1950s and 1960s.
