Named in memory of the medieval Hanse, a merchant trading association. The Hanseatic League was constituted of merchants of various free German cities and reached the height of its power in the 14th and 15th centuries. (H 52)

Named by H. Kreutz (AN 172, 127 (1906)), editor of the Astronomische Nachrichten at Kiel, an old Hanse city.
