Named in memory of W. W. Campbell (1862–1938), observational spectroscopist, director of the Lick Observatory (1901–1930), president of the University of California (1923–1930), president of the International Astronomical Union (1922–1925) and president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1931–1935). He pioneered in conceiving, organizing and carrying out the first large-scale systematic program for the accurate measurement of stellar radial velocities. (M 12457)
