Discovered 1872 July 31 by C. H. F. Peters at Clinton.

Named for a character of the Nibelungenlied, the Volsung Cycle, and the Thidrek Saga. Brunhild was a queen in German legend, won by Siegfried for Gunther. Brunhild was the daughter of Odin {or Wodan, see planets (3989) and (2155), respectively} and Erda {see planet (894)}, tha eldest of the Valkyries. (H 16; I. van Houten-Groeneveld)
