Introduction

The Republic of Belarus is situated on the W of the East European Plain in the central part of Europe. The northernmost point of Belarus is 56° 10′ N, southernmost, 51° 16′ N, westernmost 23° 11′ E and easternmost 32° 47′ E. The territory of Belarus extends for 560 km from N to S, and for 650 km from W to E covering 207 600 km2. Belarus borders Poland on the W, Lithuania on the NW, Latvia on the N, Russia on the N, NE and E, and the Ukraine on the S. Minsk is the capital of Belarus (population 1.7 million). The Republic of Belarus is divided into six regions: Minsk, Grodno, Vitebsk, Moguilev, Brest and Gomel (Fig. 40). The population of the Republic is 10.3 million (as of January 1 1993). In Belarus there are 96 large and small cities and 110 settlements.
