Zusammenfassung
Kommunikation ist in der Wirtschaft allgegenwärtig: Eine gezielte Informationspolitik und Inszenierungsstrategien gehören zum Repertoire jedes erfolgreichen Unternehmens. Dennoch mangelt es vielfach an einem umfassenden Verständnis der Unternehmenskommunikation. Die vorschnelle Fokussierung auf einzelne Vorgehensweisen (Pressearbeit, Werbung, Lobbyismus), Handlungsfelder (Finanzkommunikation, Mitarbeiterkommunikation) und Zielgrößen (Vertrauen, Reputation, Markenbildung) versperrt den Blick auf die grundlegenden Fragen, welche Bedeutung der Kommunikation aus Sicht der Unternehmensführung zukommt und auf welche Weise sie zur Wertschöpfung beiträgt. Hierbei muss konsequent betriebswirtschaftlich argumentiert werden: Investitionen in Kommunikation machen Sinn, wenn dadurch direkt oder indirekt materielle oder immaterielle Werte geschaffen werden. Der vorliegende Beitrag skizziert eine interdisziplinäre Theorie der Integrierten Unternehmenskommunikation, die ausgehend von der Rolle der Unternehmung in Markt und Gesellschaft verschiedene Ansatzpunkte der Wertschöpfung identifiziert und die wichtigsten Aufgabenfelder (Interne Kommunikation, Marktkommunikation, Public Relations) erläutert. Der schillernde Begriff der „Integration“ erfährt dabei eine neue, mehrdimensionale Bedeutung – als normative Grundlage, funktionaler Prozess und strategische Notwendigkeit der Kommunikation.

Im Mittelpunkt der Sozialtheorie stehen die grundlegenden Erklärungen des Handelns, der sozialen Ordnung und Integration sowie des sozialen Wandels (vgl. im Überblick und als Einführung in die wichtigsten Theoriekonzepte Joas und Knöbl 2004). Sie legen damit ein gemeinsames begriffliches Fundament für wirtschafts- und kommunikationswissenschaftliche Analysen.

Interessante Perspektiven bietet hierbei die seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre entstandene, inzwischen sehr produktive PR-Forschung im deutschsprachigen Raum (im Überblick: Bentele et al. 2008, Röttger 2009, Zerfaß et al. 2013a,b; Hoffjann und Huck-Sandhu 2013) und im angloamerikanischen Umfeld (Toth 2006, Botan und Hazleton 2006, Heath 2010, Sriramesh et al. 2013b).
