Abstract

The formation of noncovalent complexes by macro molecules is one of the most important molecular processes in biology. It is intimately involved in such recognition phenomena as enzyme-substrate interaction, receptor-ligand binding, formation of oligomeric proteins, assembly of transcription complexes, and the formation of cellular structures themselves. Established methods for studying these complexes suffer from various difficulties such as large sample requirements (X-ray crystallography), limited mass range (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), lack of specificity (ultracentrifuge), or poor mass resolution (gel electrophoresis).
