Abstract

Ischemic strokes are caused by a sharp fall of the cerebral blood flow (CBF) to certain regions of brain tissues. In experimental research of cerebral ischemia, the animal models are produced by a variety of methods to reduce or stop the blood supply to the brain, such as using suture, embolus, or direct cut of artery. The reduction in CBF is the key for making ischemic models; therefore, the monitoring of regional CBF is an important experimentation in the field of stroke research. This chapter introduces the common methods for monitoring CBF, with focus on the laser Doppler flowmetry, Carbon-14 iodoantipyrine autoradiography, and laser speckle flowmetry.
