Part of the book series: Biological Methods ((BM))

Abstract

The cyclical control of protein and peptide hormone synthesis and release and the existence of prohormones has been considered in Chapter 6, as has the existence of neuromodulators that sometimes are chemically identical to classical hormones, though subserving presumably different functions. These problems will not be dealt with in the present chapter, in which the old-fashioned definition of hormones (chemical messengers acting at a distance) will be accepted by default: It is true more often than not.
