About this book

This unprecedented collection of 27,000 quotations is the most comprehensive and carefully researched of its kind, covering all fields of science and mathematics.  With this vast compendium you can readily conceptualize and embrace the written images of scientists, laymen, politicians, novelists, playwrights, and poets about humankind's scientific achievements.  Approximately 9000 high-quality entries have been added to this new edition to provide a rich selection of quotations for the student, the educator, and the scientist who would like to introduce a presentation with a relevant quotation that provides perspective and historical background on his subject.  Gaither's Dictionary of Scientific Quotations, Second Edition, provides the finest reference source of science quotations for all audiences.  The new edition adds greater depth to the number of quotations in the various thematic arrangements and also provides new thematic categories.

Reviews

Praise for the first edition:

“This is an incredible feat of gathering and curating. It would unbalanced to call out a few gems--they're all here. Readers will find the expected heirlooms from Dobzhansky, Haldane, Einstein and Darwin, plus plenty of surprises from Shakespeare to Twain to Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as the inclusion of writers who haven't quite barged into the canon....Here the dross is minimal, and the riches are high-grade ore.” —American Scientist

"This … dictionary of 18,000 quotations encompasses all areas of science. … the work grew from the authors’ frustration at the difficulty of finding quotations about statistics. … this new work is larger and easier to use when looking for a subject rather than an author. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers." (S. K. Oelker, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (11), 2008)

"It is a thoroughly good and worthwhile reference work … . Gaither’s Dictionary of Scientific Quotations is a fine resource that will add to any reference collection. It contains many quotations, hard to find elsewhere, in a potentially very useful arrangement. It is well-produced, clearly laid out in a double column format … ." (Barry White, Reference Reviews, Vol. 22 (8), 2008)

About the editors

Alma Cavazos-Gaither was born on January 6, 1955, the fifth of eleven children, in the sleepy south Texas town of San Juan. Her parents were migrant farm workers and she grew up working long hours in the fields with her brothers and sisters. Upon graduating from high school she joined the US Navy. Alma has degrees from Central Texas College and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She is in the Navy Reserves and has made two deployments in support of Iraqi Freedom. She enjoys traveling, scrap booking, photography, swimming and writing.

Carl Gaither was born on June 3, 1944 in San Antonio, Texas. He was an only child, grew up in an Air Force family, and quit school while in the 10th grade to join the US Navy. Carl has degrees from the University of Hawaii, McNeese State University, Northeast Louisiana University and the University of Southwest Louisiana and has completed the US Army Command and General Staff College.
