Special Issue: International Year of Light (IYL) 2015

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light (IYL 2015). The IYL was to recognize the tremendous applications of light in our everyday lives; from benefits of sunlight, to the intricate processes in our eyes, to holography, to fiber optic communications across oceans, to extremely important applications of lasers from eye sugery to drilling holes in steel and to numerous other areas. From its inception, The National Academy of Sciences, India (the oldest Science Academy in India) is committed to bring scientific developments to the benefit of society at large. Keeping in mind, and as a part of the celebration of IYL 2015, the academy entrusted the editors to bring out a book and a special Issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Sec. A, Physical Sciences in which various aspects of light and light-based technologies will be lucidly described by experts with the aim to enthuse young students, teachers and researchers to get interested in studying more about light and be aware of its phenomenal applications. The editors were very fortunate to get a large number of experts agree to contribute to this Special Issue. Of course there are many other very interesting areas which could have been covered.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Section A: Physical Sciences, is one of the oldest journals of India, launched in the year 1930, by the National Academy of Sciences, India (the Oldest Science Academy of India).  The research/review papers of different fields of science, e.g. Chemical Sciences (Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Theoretical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry), Earth Sciences (Atmospheric Sciences, Geo-Sciences, Oceanography, Geography-Scientific aspects), Engineering Sciences including Engineering Technology (Engineering and Engineering Science, Chemical and Material Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication, Information Technology, Instrumentation), Mathematical Sciences (Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer/Information Science) and Physical Sciences (including Astronomy, Astrophysics, Experimental and Theoretical Physics, Applied Physics), are published in this journal for dissemination of the scientific knowledge and research. The papers published are indexed/abstracted by the leading abstracting agencies of the world. The papers are published after critical review and editing by the eminent experts of the concerned subject area; therefore, the quality publication is assured once the paper is accepted by the learned referees.
