European Journal of Forest Research - Introducing the Assmann Reviews of the European Journal of Forest Research

Welcome to the European Journal of Forest Research. It is our pleasure to announce a new type of articles published in this journal: the Assmann Reviews. Ernst Assmann belonged to the most influential German forest scientists in the 20st century. To honor this outstanding scientist, his pioneering work in quantitative forest science, and his ever-important holistic views, the European Journal of Forest Research is initiating a series of invited review articles entitled: Ernst Assmann Reviews on Production Ecology and Quantitative Silviculture.

New Content ItemThe reviews will cover Assmann’s core topics such as growing space and resource efficiency; productivity and site conditions; site index and yield level; tree morphology depending on species, social position, and thinning; species mingling and growth; growth of understorey trees and generation overlap; quantitative silvicultural guidelines, tree and stand modelling.

New Content ItemDuring Assmann’s lifetime, the European Journal of Forest Research, was known as Forstwissenschaftliches Centralblatt, a leading scientific journal established in 1879. Ernst Assmann served as editor of the Forstwissenschaftliches Centralblatt, the predecessor of the European Journal of Forest Research, for most of his 20-year scientific career in Munich.

New Content ItemErnst Assmann, the internationally known authority and professor for forest growth and yield science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich/Germany from 1951-1973, developed important principles of tree and stand dynamics and their dependence on environmental conditions and silvicultural interference. Assmann sought “[…] to examine the quantitative extent of growth processes in the forest in relation to time, site and economic and technical conditions […]” (Assmann 1970, p 1). His findings of how trees and stands are using space and resources for growth, how the efficiency of space and resource efficiency can be optimized if based on quantitative research findings regarding establishment and management of pure and mixed-species stands, and his approach to scale overarching research, including leaf to tree, tree to stand and stand to forest enterprise level still have high empirical, theoretical and conceptual relevance.
