Abstract

In this paper the performance of TPCs in heavy ion experiments in terms of tracking and particle identification via dE/dx is reviewed. The principle of operation - drift, readout chambers and front end electronics, is illustrated. A few of the TPCs used are presented, along with a short description of the experiments.
