Abstract:

To illustrate complex spatio-temporal effects which are possible in cellular reactions with a small number of particles, we present Monte Carlo simulations of the formation of oscillatory spark-like patterns in a model completely stochastic Ca+2 oscillator. Our analysis shows that in order to observe such patterns the minimum average number of Ca+2 ions in the cytosol may be as low as about 50.
