Ranking sections of main gas pipelines according to corrosion damage based on field polarization measurements

Abstract

Free-corrosion potentials are measured and potentiodynamic and potentiostatic anodic polarization curves are recorded on an electrode made of pipe steel in soils close to different sections of the Urengoi-Surgut-Chelyabinsk main gas pipeline. The data obtained are compared to the type of corrosion destruction of the pipe, which was determined with the use of magnetic intrapipe defectoscopy. It is proposed to rank sections of main gas pipelines according to corrosion cracking damage of the outer pipe wall estimated by polarization measurements.
