Intraventricular and meningeal anaplastic meningiomas in a heifer

Abstract

Intracranial meningioma is uncommon in the bovine species. A spontaneous case of lateral ventricular and meningeal meningiomas is described in a 14-month-old Japanese shorthorn heifer with a short-term history of neurological deficit symptoms. The heifer was euthanatized because of the progressive nature of the disease and unfavourable prognosis. Gross findings in the brain included a tumour mass arising from the left lateral ventricular wall and, in addition, three tumour nodules disseminated over the leptomeninges at the base of the brain. Histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of these tumours confirmed intraventricular and meningeal anaplastic (malignant) meningiomas. This is the first report of intracranial multiple meningiomas in the bovine species.
