Abstract

Taenia solium belongs to phylum Platyhelminthes; class Cestoda; order Cyclophyllidea; and family Taeniidae. It is a variety of tapeworms infesting the humans. Cysticercosis is caused by the infestation by the larval form the tape worm. In the eye, the cyst can be present in the anterior chamber, vitreous cavity or sub retinal space. Vision is variably affected depending on the location of the cyst, inflammatory reaction and damage to macula. The treatment of intra ocular cysticercosis is surgical and involves removal of the cyst as well as managment of coexisting secondary issues such as traction/ combined retinal detachments, vitreous membranes etc. The results would depend on the location of cyst, the presence and the degree of scarring of the retina, macular health and the timely management.
