Abstract
Hyalinizing trabecular tumor (HTT) is a rare follicular cell-derived thyroid tumor characterized by trabecular growth pattern and marked intra- and intertrabecular hyalinization. HTT was identified by Carney et al. in 1987 as a type of benign follicular neoplasm of the thyroid. This tumor shares several histological features with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), including intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions, nuclear grooves, and psammoma bodies. These and other findings such as molecular biological evidence are similar to those of PTC, which have led to the suggestion that HTT and PTC are two tumors with a close relationship. On fine-needle aspiration cytology, cytologic features of HTT, such as nuclear grooves and intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions, may suggest PTC. Here, we describe the cytological findings of HTT and differential diagnoses between HTT and PTC.
