Abstract
Ruzigrass (Brachiaria ruziziensis), a tropical forage grass, has high productivity without P application even in P-deficient soils, and P deficiency cannot be observed in spite of extremely low P concentrations in the plant. To clarify the mechanism associated with the successful growth under low P status, we analyzed protein in relation to P status of the plant. A specific spot of acidic protein with Mr of ca. 40 k was detected in the root of ruzigrass grown without P supply. Partial amino acid sequences of this protein were determined, and a sequence homology search indicated that the amino acid sequences of the protein were highly homologous to those of the endochitinase from several plants.
