Name
The genus and species name honors famous scientists (Alfredo Giardi: 1846–1908 and W. D. Lambl: 1841–1895). Latin: duodenalis = duodenum = anterior portion of the small intestine.
Geographic Distribution/Epidemiology
Worldwide; in tropical regions especially increased numbers occur; it is estimated that worldwide several hundred thousands of humans are constantly infected. These numbers will increase, since cross-infection with species/subspecies respectively strains (which occur in animals) are now proven.
Morphology/Life Cycle
G. lamblia occurs in two stages: trophozoites and cysts (Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4). The trophozoites appear pear shaped or drop like; their flattened ventral side contains a large adhesion system (called discus) and the typical eight flagella, which are symmetrically arranged (Fig. 5).
