Abstract
This chapter provides a general introduction to the Dutch higher education system. Amongst other things, light is shed on the size of the higher education sector and the types of higher education institutions it hosts, the organisational and (internal) governance structure of universities, the funding landscape, and the national system of research evaluation. This general outline is followed by a description of the main actors that play relevant roles in the coordination and funding of the overall higher education system.
