Definition
In general, environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a tool that can evaluate environmental protection and sustainable development in an integrated way. According to the European Union (EU) definition, EIA is a procedure that ensures that the environmental implications of decisions are taken into account before the decisions are made.
With a broader definition, EIA is an activity conceived to identify and predict the potential impact of a project both on the living and on the nonliving environment and also on human health for the purpose of recommending appropriate legislative measures, programs, and operational procedures to minimize the impact (Anjaneyulu and Valli 2007).
