Abstract

The chapter covers the technical aspects and clinical applications for performing diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the principles behind patient preparation, image acquisition protocols and optimisation techniques. Continuing advances in technology have resulted in renewed interest for the role of DWI as a biomarker for upper GI pathology, including the detection and staging of malignancy as well as monitoring of treatment response. The chapter provides a succinct overview of DWI in the upper GI tract and offers an insight into possible future directions for patient care.
