Intracranial Pressure Monitoring and Ventricular Drainage

Abstract

Insertion of a ventricular drainage system can be a critical and lifesaving procedure in the setting of an acute brain injury. This system can provide continuous intracranial pressure monitoring and cerebrospinal fluid diversion. The following chapter describes insertion of an intracranial pressure monitoring or ventricular drainage system based on external craniometric landmarks. With careful preprocedural planning, this can be safely placed at the bedside in an emergent setting. After insertion, it is paramount to follow select steps to recalibrate and maintain the system. The chapter also provides basic principles to minimize complications and additional tips for troubleshooting.
