Definition
The John A. Hartford Index of Societal Aging or the Aging Society Index is a global aging index designed for measuring the health and well-being of aging populations. It was launched at the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics’ World Congress in 2017 and has already been used to rank countries for what is termed healthy aging or societal aging. The index takes a broad view of aging. It shall increase the acknowledgment of the substantial benefits of an aging society and improve policy in a direction that addresses both possibilities and challenges arising from demographic development. Analyses of the Aging Society Index at the domain and measure levels can, for instance, identify countries that perform well in given areas and thus serve as models for improvement for countries with specific gaps in their policy.
