Aerobic Granular Sludge Technology

Abstract

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a recent innovation within biofilm reactors for wastewater treatment. Considered as a particular type of biofilm comprised of self-immobilized cells, it constitutes a promising technology that do not require a material support for biofilm growth. AGS systems can retain a large quantity of microorganisms, enabling rapid bioconversion of many pollutants to be achieved and leading to improvements in the performance and stability of the reactor. Consequently, large volumes of wastewater can be treated in compact reactors. Since the granules are larger and have a greater density compared to activated sludge flocs, they settle fast, which facilitates the biosolid-liquid separation. This chapter is intended to fully characterize the AGS technology, describing the formation of aerobic granules and the factors affecting the development of these microbial aggregates. The role of aerobic granules in wastewater treatment is summarized from the early laboratory-scale studies to current full-scale applications.
