Abstract
This chapter looks at two different ‘cases’ which reflect different elements of community engagement and elements of the learning city model. The one case is called Zindowe village in Mberengwa District, Zimbabwe, which has been the focus of a community engagement project for Midlands State University (MSU) since 2010. The Zimbabwe project serves as a point of comparison for the second case which is named ‘Edu-village’. Edu-village had been operating formally for only about a year at the time of writing this chapter and operates across the Free State Province of South Africa, including a rural location some 120 kilometres from the main campus of the University of the Free State (UFS). Both cases are an opportunity to explore in more detail than hitherto the contexts in which African universities are operating.
