Abstract

Urinary incontinence after prostatectomy is a significant issue that can affect the quality of life in men who are undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. With the growing number of radical prostatectomies performed globally, the incidence of post-prostatectomy incontinence (PPI) continues to be on the rise. Several risk factors have been identified to predispose patients to PPI and increase the likelihood of postoperative incontinence. Early recognition of patients suffering from PPI is paramount to their timely management. Evaluation of these patients relies heavily on a thorough history and physical examination. Both conservative and surgical (sling or artificial urinary sphincter) approaches have been employed in treating PPI, though we presently lack a standardized clinical algorithm to appropriately stratify patients to the ideal treatment. In this chapter, we provide an introductory overview to PPI, with emphasis on its prevalence, impact, risk factors, pathophysiology, evaluation, and management. More in-depth discussions of underlying pathophysiology, approach to patient evaluation, and management options will be covered extensively elsewhere in this textbook.
