Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)

Abstract

This chapter discusses the technical aspects of the peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), including patient positioning, equipment setup, operative technique, and perioperative management including a discussion of common complications. The technique described in this chapter was developed at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center with assistance from Dr. Haruhiro Inoue and has been modified over the last several years. As this is a relatively new procedure without evidence-based guidelines for the individual steps of the procedure, there are many variations at the numerous centers performing POEMs. Many of the variations are referenced within this chapter.
