Introduction

Linguistics in relation to couple and family therapy refer to the use of language throughout the course of therapy. The significance of linguistics in therapy is in how the use of language; the punctuation of certain words, terms, and phrases; the repetition of certain ideas; or the use of specific semantics, metaphors, or discourses have implications and significance within each individual client and between clients in a system. While the focus on stories, narratives, and discourses is aligned with a few family therapy theories, linguistics is significant beyond any theory, model, or technique and finds it’s philosophical origin in social constructionism and social constructivism. Within the field of couple/marriage and family therapy, the emphasis on linguistics is underscored within communication concepts and metacommunication applied to interactional dynamics within systems.
