Abstract

This research article focuses on laser welding of Mg alloy AZ31 by 2 different laser sources. Comparison of solid state rod Nd:YAG laser and disc Yb:YAG laser is done in several experiments. Laser power, surface pretreatment, shielding gas are changed and evaluated. The typical weld characteristics and defects of Mg welds, as sagging, porosity, spattering and undercut were observed. Higher beam quality of disc laser, smaller spot size proved to be advantageous for Mg welding, because of higher weld penetration, less dependence on surface conditions and welding in keyhole mode. Porosity was connected with deep penetration welds.
