Abstract

Early childhood feeding disorders and failure to thrive, involving refusal to eat or poor acceptance of new tastes, consistencies, and textures, are frequent causes for parents to consult their pediatrician. Since parents often see the situation as one of “life and death” for their child, they are usually under significant emotional strain. Persistent feeding disorders are associated with impairments to infant development and the parent–infant relationship. The present chapter provides insights into the diagnostic workup, counseling, and treatment of these disorders. Highlighting options for specific and problem-centered intervention early on contributes to the prevention of more serious adverse developments in the infant, as well as in the parent–infant relationship.
