Abstract

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important health outcome for youth on dialysis and is often significantly impaired compared to healthy children. In this chapter we review the literature on HRQOL in pediatric dialysis patients and discuss comprehensive assessment of this construct, which may include both generic and disease-specific measures, as well as both parent-proxy and youth self-report. In addition, we will discuss how comorbidities are associated with HRQOL and associations between alternative dialysis modalities and improved HRQOL. The literature on HRQOL in children and adolescents on dialysis would benefit from additional clarity regarding correlates of HRQOL and testing of interventions to improve this important health outcome.
