Abstract

Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), whose origins date back to centuries, are pivotal in modern general anesthesia practice. This review will encompass old and new molecules, including principles available in the very next future, their mechanisms of action, old and new antagonists. We will discuss the role of neuromuscular monitoring (NMM), fundamental and now a standard of care for appropriate general anesthesia management. We hope this review will provide a comprehensive, practical, and integrated view of muscle paralysis in anesthesia and acute-care settings to ease the use of NMBAs and to allow a reliable and safe recovery from paralysis.
