Abstract

Lifestyle modification continues to be the basis of obesity treatment despite the lack of substantial long-term efficacy. Pharmacotherapy is an important viable treatment option for many patients who do not respond to lifestyle therapy and who are not candidates for bariatric surgery. When associated with the intragastric balloon treatment, pharmacotherapy can be an excellent tool for optimizing results.

In this chapter, we will address the current antiobesity drugs that can be used concomitantly with the intragastric balloon, as well as the symptomatic drugs used to reduce the common adverse effects of this procedure, and pharmacologic strategies for risk reduction and complications of the method.
