Abstract

Orbital exenteration is a surgery in which the globe and the surrounding orbital contents are surgically removed due to malignancy or severe orbital infection. Over the years, this surgery has evolved to allow varying degrees of tissue excision, with modern techniques permitting more conservative surgical approaches to spare tissue removal when possible and more extensive exenterations involving removal of orbital bone when necessary. Despite the progress in technique, orbital exenteration remains a surgery of last resort after all medical and other therapeutic options have been exhausted. Orbital exenteration may be broadly divided into four techniques: standard or total exenteration, eyelid-sparing orbital exenteration, anterior or subtotal orbital exenteration, and extended exenteration.
