Intensive Care Treatment of Critical Tuberculosis

Handbook of Global Tuberculosis Control

Abstract

Despite the recent advancements in tuberculosis (TB) treatment, 1–3 % of TB patients still progress to critical TB, which has a high mortality rate. In areas with a heavy TB burden, TB intensive care units should be set up to isolate critical TB patients from general critical patients in order to reduce the nosocomial TB transmission and provide effective care. Respiratory failure is the main reason for TB patients to be treated in ICU. The intensive care focus is on monitoring respiratory function, hemodynamics, and mechanical ventilation in addition to anti-infection treatment.
