Abstract

Climatic variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind determine tree survival and growth and can be related to the distribution of species or populations. Prediction of potential production of particular tree crops at the landscape level, however, requires a knowledge of environmental physics, particularly of the relative efficiency of various species in intercepting and transforming solar radiation to chemical energy as biomass (Cannell, 1989; Monteith, 1977). An important aspect of environmental physics is the site’s energy balance, that is, the partitioning of net energy into soil heat flux, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, and energy stored as biomass.
