Abstract
Starting with Der p 1 (1,2) from the mite and Dol m 5 (3) from the hornet the u-biquitous allergens are rapidly being cloned. These include Bet v 1, 2 and 3 from birch (4–6) and the allergens from related trees, the group 1 and 5 allergens from timothy (7, 8) and perennial rye (9–11) and group 5/9 from Kentucky blue grass (12, 13). The two chains of the cat Fel d 1 were cloned early (14) and as well as Amb a 1, 2 and 5 from ragweed (15–17). Cockroach (18) and mould allergens (19) are being investigated. Cloning of mite allergens has now been performed in D. pteronyssinus, D. farinae, Euro-glyphus maynei, Blomia tropicalis and Lepidoglyphus destructor. DNA encoding the 7 groups of named mite allergens (20) has now been cloned as well as from further allergens from D farinae (21, 22) and D. pteronyssinus (23). Allergens have been cloned using data from immunochemical studies or by using IgE-immunoassay to screen phage plaque-libraries. This has identified clones producing both known or previously unrecognised allergens.
