Typhoid Fever

  • Chapter

Abstract

Typhoid fever (Typhus abdominalis, enteric fever) is an acute systemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi (Salmonella subspecies I, serovar typhi). The term “enteric fever” includes paratyphoid fever, which is the disease clinically similar to typhoid fever, but the fatality rate is much lower. It is caused by serovar S. paratyphi A, S. paratyphi B, S. paratyphi C, or S. sendai. Other serovars belonging to the same subspecies, such as S. choleraesuis, S. panama, S. dublin, etc., are known to have a high potentiality to cause septicemia and to give rise to pyemic lesions in the internal organs in man. The distinction between paratyphoid fever, except that caused by S. paratyphi A, and salmonella septicemia due to these serovars is by no means absolute. Infections due to S. typhi and S. paratyphi A, which are primarily adapted to man, are characterized by a long incubation period, 10 to 14 days, and those due to the others by a shorter incubation period, 12 to 36 h, and by their clinical manifestation as gastroenteritis.
