Abstract
As the primary focus of care for the mentally retarded has changed from institutional settings to community environments, substantial numbers of these individuals need concomitant mental health services (Menolascino, 1983). A number of studies have demonstrated that mental illness is present in the mentally retarded (Chess, 1962; Eaton & Menolascino, 1982; Webster, 1971). Outpatient clinic studies have found a 20 to 35% prevalence of mental illness in the mentally retarded (Menolascino, 1965; Philips & Williams, 1975).
