Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((NAIV,volume 45))

Abstract

Previous activity on Jan Mayen started with the 17th century whalers. Remains from this period and the 19th century scientific work are now only archaeologically interesting. The same applies to the buildings from the war period 1940–45. A few tiny trapping cabins and the post-war meteorological and navigation stations are the remaining standing buildings today.
