(dioctyl phthalate, DOP) n. C6H4[COO–CH2CH(C2H5)C4H9]2. The most widely used plasticizer for PVC, also compatible with ethyl cellulose, cellulose nitrate, and polystyrene. It is generally recognized as imparting the best all-around good properties vinyls, and is often used as the standard against which other plasticizers are evaluated. DOP has been approved by the FDA for use in packaging films for greaseless foodstuffs of high water content.
