Abstract

In China the dovelopment of acoustic detection and the studies on the structure of atmospheric boundary layer over land and ocean and the assessment of atmospheric environment with the sodar data have been carried out for more than twenty years. The main achievements of these investigations have been comprehenced in this paper. Some phenomena in the atmospheric boundary layer, such as multiple-layer inversions, strong wind shear, lump structure echo and etc., have been discovered with sodar, which are not easily discovered with direct measuring systems. The knowledge of formation, existence and maintenance for these phenomena is still meager at present. The acoustic sounder could play an important role in the further studies on these problems and other problems of atmopheric boundary layer structure.
