Abstract
In 1958, the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) was incorporated in America, and a year later published its first international quarterly volume, Technology and Culture. The aim of the society was (and is) to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relationship with society and culture. The significance of this undertaking was that it formally recognised the need to examine technological development within the framework of its application; science, politics, social change, economics, the arts and humanities (Kranzberg and Davenport, 1972).
