Abstract

As de jure divino notions of monarchy were increasingly assaulted in the courts of seventeenth-century Europe, charges of political impostorship became more commonplace. Foremost in this clandestine tradition was a manuscript of utmost heresy, De tribus impostoribus (On the three impostors), in which it was argued that Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed had established a rule of political fraud. Some of the most important surviving material related to this literary tradition can be traced to Scandanavian sources, in particular the cultural milieux of the University of Greifswald in Swedish Pomerania and the Academy of Kiel in Danish Schleswig-Holstein. The literary origin of this Latin work seems to be quite distinct from that ascribed to the later French work Le Traité des trois imposteurs. This paper will present evidence for the distinctiveness of the two traditions of imposture.

  7. Margareta was thirty years Johan’s elder. He met her through Lorentz Hartman, her son, who had accompanied him to Germany. She was widow of the wealthy goldsmith Lorenz Hartman and brought 145,000 SKR with her dowry. They had no children. Salvius had an illegitimate son, Paul Mücken, and in 1641 Salvius contemplated remarrying. At his death, Margareta set up a silver altar in the Church of St Nicolai and gave a large endowment `ad pion usus’. Still, Salvius’ secretary argued that he died of too much erotic love: `Femmellarum etiam, insuavis conugii sui taedio, amoribus obnoxius valde ac dedisti fuit.’ SBL (1836) suppl., p. 166. Salvius’ career, from copyist and secretary to diplomat and statesman, was swift, and provoked jealous remarks among noblemen, such as Ake Tott, who asked: `Is the situation in Sweden such that ink-masters dare insult gentlemen? (Är det sä tillstädt i Sverige att bläckmästare viga kujonera kavaljerer?)’.

René Pintrad, Le Libertinage érudit de la premier moitié du dix-septième siècle (Paris: Boivin, 1943), suggests that the `catechism’ may be a reference to Pierre Garasse’s Doctrines curieuses des beaux ésprits de ce temps, ou pretendus telles (Paris, 1623) that we know Christina asked Claude Saumaise to send her. But it could refer to another work. In view of Bourdelot’s friendship with Saumaise and Isaac La Peyrère, the manuscript may in fact have been a manuscript copy of PraeAdamitae, which had circulated in manuscript since 1643. At Würzburg, 15 December 1655, Johan Christian Boineburg wrote to Herman Conring asking, `Quid videbi tibi de Praeadamitarum? Eum Reginae Suediae mihi dixit vocar la Peire, et vivere in contulnario Condaei: scilicet ita est: noscitur ex socio, qui non cognoscitur ex se.’ Commercio epistolici boineburgica (1703), 153. In 1652, Bourdelot tells of De Castro’s arrival to Stockholm and immediately adds that La Peyrère is expected at the court (he never came further than Copenhagen, where he frequented Count Corfitz Ulfeldt’s circle of anthropologists, among them Ole Worm and Thomas Bang).

Niewöhner remarks that in 1664, Leibniz in a short note compared the doctrine of the three impostors to the arguments of Vanini. In the many bundles of unpublished Leibniz letters at Hannover, there has so far been found only one letter from J. F. Mayer, dated 1707. It deals simply with the coronation ceremonies of the Swedish Queen Hedwig Eleonore, and provides no information about the manuscript. In the longer correspondence between Leibniz and the Berlin librarian La Croze in 1716, La Croze describes the manuscript as a trifle and recommends that Leibniz have it burned if he ever finds it.
