Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of diatom wall construction, morphology (light microscopy [LM]), and structure (electron microscopy [EM]), cell cytology, and aspects of wall morphogenesis. It also seeks to highlight areas where more information is required, while stressing the importance of applying descriptive terminology appropriately and consistently.
