Sleep in Children and Adolescents with Neurobehavioral Disorders

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in children and adolescents who have neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders. Evidence also suggests a relationship between the quality of sleep and neurobehavioral symptoms. Timely recognitions and effective management are therefore essential to improve the quality of life of children with these disorders. Various behavioral techniques remain the cornerstone of management for sleep disorders in children and adolescents with very limited and selective use of pharmacotherapy. This chapter reviews sleep in children and adolescents who have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders.
